The context
Emma Jing is an emerging designer with strong product and a deeply personal brand heritage rooted in New Zealand. The brand had real foundations, craft, quality, a compelling founding story. What it didn't have was the clarity to communicate any of that effectively to a UK audience. The identity was inconsistent, the positioning was undefined, and the commercial framing wasn't built for the market it was trying to enter.
The challenge
To take a brand with genuine emotional resonance and commercial potential, and build the identity and market-entry infrastructure that would allow it to grow in the UK, without losing the personal quality that made it worth building.
The insight
The brand's origin story was its greatest untapped asset. Emma Jing's initials come from a handwritten note from her late father. That detail, small, specific, deeply personal, was the foundation the entire new identity could be built from. A brand grounded in that kind of meaning doesn't need to perform luxury. It just needs to be coherent.
The strategy
I began with origin and meaning rather than aesthetics. The initials as a design element became the anchor of the new identity system, connecting the brand to something true before addressing how it looked or sounded. From there: positioning for the UK market, refined audience definition, value proposition development and a pricing perception strategy designed to shift how the brand was understood commercially.
What I built
- Full rebrand: new logo and identity system built from the initials concept
- Brand positioning framework and audience definition
- Tone of voice and messaging hierarchy for the UK market
- Pricing perception strategy
- Two photoshoots: produced, directed and styled independently
- Video campaign: scripted, shot and edited in Premiere Pro
- Comprehensive UK marketing strategy
- Print assets and digital brand guidelines
The outcome
Post-repositioning perception testing showed a 298% improvement in brand value perception, a significant shift in how the brand was understood commercially. The outcome was a coherent identity and market-ready narrative that strengthened both emotional resonance and commercial credibility in a new territory.
What this proves
This case study demonstrates the full arc of brand strategy: from cultural and commercial diagnosis through insight development, identity creation, production direction and measurable outcome. It proves the ability to work independently across strategy, creative direction and execution, and to measure the result.
